This is a wonderful gourd type maraca that features Maya designs on the side. Two of them are pictured so you can see how each Guatemala maraca is unique and different. They are sold individually.
The maraca was made by Danilo Cal a Maya Quiche, who lives in Parramos, Sacatepequez.
Danilo started working with the arts, carving wooden figurines when
he was 14 years old. Along with his brother, they started producing a
variety of folk art and started selling to tourists in Antigua,
Guatemala. However, due to intense competition with fellow artisans,
his brother Julio started learning how to make drums and other musical
instruments. Danilo also learned to make drums and several types of
flutes and whistles. They opened up a small stall in the Antigua market
three years ago where they sell to tourists from all over the world. |
