| This is a beautiful woven backpack that features Mayan designs. There is a drawstring top and the straps for the backpack tie onto loops on the back. There is plenty of room to adjust this to your comfort level. The front of the backpack also has a velcro pocket to get to things you might need quickly. The backpack measures 13 inches by 15 inches when lying flat. This is made by a Samajel B'atz' cooperative called TEJIDOS IXILES. This cooperative is made up of 55 women, living in eight villages in Nebaj, who make up the association Tejidos Ixiles (Unq'a Chem Ixil). The group began in 1988 in Las Violetas, Nebaj, in the province of El Quiché, and was legally constituted in 1995. It produces traditional weavings on backstrap looms, using figures that are particular to its villages. The organization aims to preserve the designs and techniques that form part of the Ixil heritage, and generate income that will allow us dignified living conditions. |
